ASTM A572 standard is for high strength low alloy (HSLA) structural steel plate integrated with columbium-vanadium. ASTM A572 GR 50 is a high-strength low alloy steel. Grade 50 is difficult to form since it contains more alloying elements than plain steel but offers more strength per unit of weight.
Owing to its high strength ASTM A572 Grade 50 Plates require less material to satisfy strength requirements than plain carbon steel.
ASTM A572 Grade 50 Steel Plate has yield strength of 50,000 psi minimum, a tensile strength of 65,000, and an elongation of 19% in 2”.
Due to the alloy elements of these Sheets, its atmospheric corrosion resistance is increased. Additionally, it is considered a “workhorse” grade because of its strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance.
Grade 50 is used in general plate applications when the plate will be riveted, bolted, or welded. A572 Grade 50 Plates have high strength, formability, and excellent welding properties making it suitable for a large variety of different applications.
A572 Grade 50 Sheets and Plates are commonly used in structural applications including cranes, truck frames, building structures, heavy construction equipment, bridges, liners, freight cars, machinery, heavy-duty anchoring systems, transmission towers, and many more applications where a high strength per weight ratio is needed.
